The Loungewear Question Box

Nine questions readers ask most often, answered without fuss.

Can I wear joggers to the supermarket?

Yes, if they are opaque, clean and cut straight or wide rather than tight at the ankle. Add a bridging layer and outdoor shoes and they read as casual wear. More in Take Soft Clothes Outside.

Why does my favourite hoodie go fuzzy?

That is pilling: short fibres rubbing loose and tangling on the surface. Friction from bag straps, mixed laundry loads and tumble drying speed it up. A fabric shaver or sweater comb removes it.

What is the most versatile cozy fabric?

Mid-weight loopback French terry is a strong all-rounder because it holds its shape outdoors, breathes indoors and washes easily. See the comparison in What Softness Is Made Of.

How can I tell if leggings or light trousers are too sheer?

Stand by a bright window, bend forward and check in a mirror or with a phone camera. If skin, underwear or pocket linings show, keep them for home or wear a longer layer over them.

Why did my sweatshirt shrink?

Heat is the usual cause. Hot washes and tumble drying tighten cotton fibres. Wash at 30°C and dry flat to keep the size you bought.

Should I size up for loungewear?

Usually not. Most loungewear is already cut relaxed. Sizing up can make shoulders droop and hems drag. Check garment measurements and try the sitting test instead.

Is fabric softener good for fleece?

It is best avoided. Softener coats fibres and can make fleece flat and less lofty over time. A cool wash and air drying keep it fluffier.

How often should I wash merino loungewear?

Less often than cotton. Merino tends to resist holding odours, so airing between wears is often enough. Wash cool on a wool cycle when needed. Our care sequences walk through it.

What does OEKO-TEX on a label mean?

OEKO-TEX STANDARD 100 indicates the product has been tested against a list of harmful substances. It does not certify organic content or working conditions, which other labels such as GOTS address.
